increased
protective factors of family communication, cohesion, organization, parenting efficacy,
consistent parenting and love leading to actual reductions in parent's alcohol and drug
use and older children's tobacco and alcohol use. A five year follow-up conducted on a 3
county Utah study found remarkable durability of the results on families. Additionally, a
second randomized clinical trial funded by NIDA and NIMH involving 6th graders
in 20 rural Iowa counties, found significant positive results of the middle school version
of the Strengthening Families Program
in reducing risk factors and increasing protective factors for drug use. Costs The costs for implementing the program include: $150.00 for the 6 manual package. Once the manuals are purchased they can be photocopied for all trainers, participating children and parents, thus drastically reducing the costs. The on-site training of trainers is $2000.00 plus expenses. The additional costs of trainers salaries, child care, meals, transportation are paid by the implementing agencies through federal, state, or county grants. Replication The program has been replicated on five CSAP demonstration/evaluation grants with different ethnic groups (rural African-Americans in Alabama, urban African-American's in Detroit, Pacific-Islander's in Hawaii, and Hispanic families in Denver) with similar positive results.
